Now, this was just wonderfully mad. Adapting Douglas Adams's radio series and books, it was a peculiar, very British brand of sci-fi comedy. Arthur Dent, Earth's last survivor, bumbling through space with aliens and a supercomputer. The effects were charmingly primitive, but that was part of its appeal, really. It was witty, deeply philosophical in a silly way, and utterly unique. A proper mind-bender that left you chuckling long after the credits rolled.
