Well, this was something different from across the pond. A group of rebels, mostly convicts, fighting a galactic empire. It was dark, really cynical for its time. And while the sets often looked like they were made with cardboard and sticky tape, the stories were sharp, exploring moral ambiguities and the futility of rebellion. You never quite knew who to trust, and happy endings were a rarity. It had a stark, almost brutal honesty to its space opera.
