The Generation GapWhat our critics say

But in 1989, it was still on KTMA-TV, then Comedy Central. This was the ultimate anti-establishment broadcast, just some guys and their robots trapped in space, forced to watch the worst movies ever made. And they made it brilliant. The rapid-fire riffs, the low-fi aesthetic, the sheer joy of tearing down cinematic garbage. It was a communal experience, proving bad movies could make for great television.

Before prestige cable got all the dark glory, *American Gothic* was a truly creepy network show about evil personified in small-town America. Gary Cole's Sheriff Lucas Buck was one of TV's most chilling villains, and the show reveled in its Southern Gothic atmosphere and supernatural dread. It was serialized horror on CBS, which was unheard of, hinting at the darker, more complex storytelling that would soon dominate the landscape, proving audiences were hungry for more than weekly monster-of-the-week.
