ActRaiser was one of the early SNES games, drawing upon the success of side-scrolling platform action titles and the building model of Sim City. You play "The Master" (essentially God), and must save the world from evil. First you purge the land by sending your spirit into a warrior with a big sword and magic powers. This side scrolling portion puts you in many different locales, from swamps and forests, to pyramids and snowy mountaintops. As you eliminate evil from different parts of the land, you allow villagers to return and build their towns. You then control an angel who helps guide the villagers in their town building, and can send down miracles to aid them in their needs.

The Generation GapWhat our critics say

The 20th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Good & Evil, released in 2024, reminds us why the original was so beloved. This enhanced version celebrates its unique blend of stealth, combat, puzzle-solving, and photography. It’s still Jade’s compelling journey to expose government conspiracy, now with updated visuals and performance. The game’s charm, its nuanced narrative, and distinctive art direction remain timeless, proving its enduring legacy two decades later.

This SNES classic was pure magic, seamlessly blending god-sim city-building with side-scrolling action stages. You'd nurture your civilization, then descend as a warrior god to smite monsters. Two distinct gameplay styles that somehow perfectly complemented each other. It was an absolute marvel for its time, showing incredible ambition and execution. A historical example of how early game designers weren't afraid to fuse disparate genres, a lesson modern games could truly learn from.
